Extremly Loud and Incredibly Close
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a masterpiece because it tells of a time of great sorrow in the United States that brought us together as a nation though the eyes of a young boy who lost his father in 9/11. The book follows certain themes that will help you understand it better. Retaining to lines of the immediate past of the history and understand of the day September 11, 2001. Illustrates the highest themes how the nation has grown from this situation and how individuals have handled loosing a love one because of it. And finally brings memories and emotions together to form single ideas, understanding the phycology of how a child deals with loosing a loved one. As you continue to read this essay you'll have a better understanding on not just how the book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a masterpiece but also understanding the event of 9/11, learning things you never knew before.
The book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is based on an event that took place in 2001. I was only four at the time so I don't remember much of it. Just remember seeing my mom and grandma crying as they watched a "what I thought was a sad movie" with the plot of two planes crashing into some buildings. But as I grew older I understood those buildings were more than just some building, "The Twin Towers were the centerpiece of the World Trade Center complex. At 110 stories each, 1WTC and 2 WTC provided nearly 10 million square feet of office space for about 35,000 people and 430 companies. They were the tallest building in New York... Attracted roughly 70,000 tourists and commuters every day." ( the World Trade Center History " 911 Memorial.2014 National Sept 11 Memorial and Museum, n.d. Wed.15. Dec. 2014). The World Trade Center was more than some buildings. They were involved in companies and corporations across the globe. Seen as the root that brought hundreds of business together in the US. Who and why would any want to destroy something so important one may ask themselves, why would someone want to kill thousands of innocent people who? Well this is who,"9/11 is short hand for four coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group that occurred on the morning of September 11, 2001. The attacks killed 2,977 people." ( 'What happened 9/11?' 911 Memorial. 2014 National Sept 11 Memorial and Museum, n.d. Wed, 15 Dec. 2014) In curtain parts of the world we are hated and seen as an unholy country. Out of hate Islamic Extremis thought they were doing the will of their god and high jacked 4 planes. Crashing 2 of them in the World Trade Center, 1 at the Pentagon, and the last one never reached it's destination because of the brave people on that plane who fought back and forced the plane to crash in a field. Why did these people have to die?
The Masterpiece Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close explores the "why" factor. Oscars wonders why even after 3 years has past sense his father death. Why did it happen, why did he have to die, why would someone do something like this? First we have to understand that 9/11 wasn't some random act of hate one day. It was bound to happen one day but maybe we weren't expecting it to be as huge as an event as it was in the past. " Al- Qaeda is an international Islamist extremist terrorists network founded in the late 1980s by Osama bin Laden who was killed in a US military operation on May 1, 2011... They have claimed responsibility for numerous terrorist attacks since early 1990s including the 1998 US Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, the 2000 Attack on the USS Cole, and the 9/11 attacks. "(What is al-Qaede? 911 Memorial 2014 National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum n.d. 15 Dec. 2014) As you can see 9/11 wasn't a random event. Over time it was bound to happen but we didn't know the exact date or where it will happen. But this was an attack that happen out of hate as it is explained, " The Terrorists did not have the capacity to destroy the United States, so they set their sights on symbolic targets instead. The Twin Towers, as the centerpiece of the World Trade Center symbolized globalization and American's economic power and prosperity." ( Why did the Terrorists Attack the World Trade Center And The Pentagon? 911 Memorial. 2014 National Sept 11 Memorial and Museum, n.d. 15 Dec. 2014) As you can understand this attack was taken out on hate and thought that the US was unpure. But out of that hate we gained something more. A rebirth in the Trade Center.
The masterpiece reminds us that as time moves on we push forward by rebuilding and honoring the ones we have lost."1WTC will have more than 100 stories and standing taller, at 1,776 feet, than the original Twin Towers. This building is expected to be completed in 2013. The other building will be developed in the coming years." (How is the site being rebuilt?' 911 Memorial .2014 National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum, n.d. Wed. 15 Dec. 2014) The City of New York made plans to replace the Twin Towers. As the saying goes " money never sleeps" they couldn't just stop and let this be the end of 100s of business relationships of the past and soon to be even more in the future. But they weren't going to forget the loved ones and Heroes that died on that fateful day."The 9/11 Memorial opened on September 11,2011... The memorial park surrounds two enormous reflecting pools set within the foot pints of the North and South towers. The plaza is lined with cobblestones..." (What is 9/11 Memorial?' 911 Memorial. 2015 National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum, n.d. Wed. 15 Dec. 2014) The design of the memorial was inspired to helps us to never for get that day and to remember the ones that sacrificed their lives to try to save as many people as possible. It also shows how close our community is and reminds us how we helped each other pick up the pieces and rebuild what was left broken.
The prominent memories and emotions that are brought up in this masterpiece are the photos of people committing suicide on 9/11 and dyeing in the line of duty. I'm the book Oscar developes an idea, after he discovered images of a man jumping from one of the twin towers, what if they could fly back up to safety. In Oscer's eyes he wanted it to be in reverse showing a small flip show of the man flying back up into the sky but not going back to the tower. He wanted him to fly away to safety, as he brings up a bird seed shirt several times in the book. The birds fly over to grab you and eat the seeds and take you away from the danger. Besides suicide some people were never able to tell their loved ones goodbye or that they loved them one last time. For example, "I love you too..." ( Raunch, Mike, and Lozzie Jacobs. "Story Corps Animated Short: "John ans Joe" Story-Corps. House of Hussle, n.d. Wed. 02 Dec. 2014) In the short video clip of John Viguano Sr. telling his two sons who were fire fighter and police officer died in duty while helping save civilians on 9/11. He was one of the few fathers who had the chance to tell their children they loved them one last time and hear them say I love you back. As you can see this has a very deep emotional affect on Oscar who seems to obsesse over how he wishes the birds could have saved the people including his father. Finally I'll be telling you how the master piece shows the understanding of a child's psychological handling of grief towards a child who has lost a loved one.
The masterpiece has evidence of prof that the author understands the grief of a child loosing a loved one by a terrible accident that could also could be seen as murder. Oscar lost his father now he feels alone, insecure, and as if his mother is trying to replace and maybe even for get his father. "The absence of a person takes time to fully accept but even then children may continue to miss them... In the truth, children never 'get over' a person's death but they can learn to live with reality. Grief is not a problem we are trying to fix for a child; it is an experience they are living."(National Alliance for Grieving Children) As you can see Osker grieves thought the book sharing his feelings mostly with his grandmother and listening to his father's voice recordings on their phone. But this isn't a bad thing at all it will help them grow and developed as a person." Person growth is often a by-product going through the grief. It is important to note that personal growth doesn't diminish the sense of loss or grief a person feels, nor does it imply that someone's death was a positive experience." (National Alliance for Grieving Children) as you can see that at the end of the book Osker does grow from this experience.
As you can see Extremly Loud and Incredibly Close is a master piece because it returns to lines of the immediate past, illustrates the highest themes how the nation has changed in time, and brings about memories and emotions to the person experiencing this work of art. I hope that this essay has helped you open your eyes and have a much deeper understanding of not just why this book is an excellent read, but to inform you that 9/11 was more than just some terrorist attack against the United States but an event in history that helped mold us into an even stronger nation.
